Charming graphics are a given in the Mystery Case Files series. Using the signature finger-pointing silhouettes of the New Zealand-based company and no shortage of tongue-in-cheek humour, this title offers puzzles that defy simple logic to create a game that you don’t have to think too hard about. With just a few items on screen at any one time, puzzles are solved by seeing different patterns and solving logical and bizarre puzzles, and solving mini-puzzles using different objects from the environment. A good case of this is the escape from the cell phone tower tower, where the protagonist is inside a thick metal cast, and he solves this by using the long metal pole that’s to hand to drill his way out of the tower.
The gaming experience with the Mystery Case Files series includes a main storyline, a mini-game, and a puzzle type that is well-designed and can often be solved with logic. This is, despite the dated humor and character clichés, an extremely well-done series that is a lot of fun and provides an interesting gaming experience from beginning to end.
The 4th edition of MYSTERY CASE FILES: CELEBRITY JOURNALISM gives you the opportunity to take part in a thrilling, action-packed game that pits you against criminals who have committed sensational crimes. The game introduces news features, such as crime scene photos, press conferences, and juror, newspaper, and TV interviews, to provide clues, along with FBI technology and examinations of the crime scene to help you solve the case. The NEW Special Edition contains more than 60 exciting Crime Scene Puzzles that take you behind the scenes to solve cases that involve Big Macs, Death by Helicopter, and even a Dilemma Murder Mystery! Crime Scene Puzzles give you clues to collect hidden clues, try their “Solved?” Game, read the evidence, and match the crime scene photo.
The 8th installment of MYSTERY CASE FILES brings you more than a dozen thrilling case scenarios, plus the opportunity to fulfill important duty in a brand new, two-player mode, named “Narrator Mode.” In these cases, you play the role of either the police officer or sheriff, and the suspects are the narrator and his friends. But be careful what you say! If the suspects don’t like something you say, they can take it to court! The new, four-player mode, called “The Truth Game,” takes the concept of the two-player mode to a whole new level. In Truth Game, you take the role of the investigator, while your friend plays the role of the witness. The witness can commit crimes and the investigator has to work to uncover them.
The story, of course, is the usual Mystery Case Files fare, with moustached detectives everywhere, a variety of wacky characters, a mysterious fox-woman, and even some obvious nods to a few Hollywood classics, but it’s the homey, family-oriented atmosphere that makes the series special. There’s something really nice about a series of questing games where you are never particularly worried about being recognized as a gamer and the whole thing is a whole lot of fun.
