321. i have always wanted to give my children an education that would open their minds and hearts to the mystery of god, not a training in narrow specialization which only provides them with the tools for a well-paid job. i would like them to be able to live a life of experience, of contact with reality, an authentic and disinterested humanity, and to be able to give something of their life to others. so i have worked on many of their qualities and desires, following the footsteps of my own parents, who were also educators. in my family, the most meaningful moments in life are linked to a family gathering which makes the whole family take part in the celebration of a shared joy. i also asked my parents not to give me a particular subject or a degree, but to permit me to express what i was at the time. i was guided to choose the one which seemed the most appropriate to my personality and i was given a means of expressing my love for the lord and of serving him.
418. in church communities, we always discover in the best of them certain weaknesses which require our collaboration, as if they were the most precious gifts of god. the church is always making decisions, but these decisions are always provisional. the church is always saying yes, but she never says no. the church is always open to others, but she is never closed off. the church is never satisfied, but she is never bored. the church is always in search of answers, but never in search of a definitive truth.
16. if the churchs mission is to be opened to the world, it must be recognized that the progress of humanism is constantly threatening to hinder the full development of that mission. in her mission of proclaiming the gospel, the church must renew herself and must involve people in her own renewal. the churchs renewal is not something which is forced upon her. to act otherwise is to put her back into a defensive posture and to ignore the gifts which she has received. the renewal of the church is not a luxury which can be dispensed with at times of tranquility. instead, it is a necessity, a constant duty which is demanded by the times. only the church can renew herself. in a way, we can say that the church is a living school which must take the future into account, and must always have a sense of urgency in her mission. the church is a community of the living word of god. we are each responsible for bringing it into our own lives, and the church is conscious of her duty to listen to her members and to draw from them the wisdom they have gained in carrying out their tasks.
53. i pray for a church, a church which has definitively left behind those things which distort its vision, a church which remains open to the gift of grace, a church which is also ready to learn from the past and to discern what is essential for the future. i ask the lord to pour his grace on your work, so that you may continue to be a light in the darkness, and that people may continue to look to you as a model of holiness and fidelity. i ask you to remain vigilant, to pray without ceasing and to work with the lord, so that the world may come to know the beauty of the gospel and to recognize the eternal value of the soul. i ask you to come to know the meaning of fidelity to the gospel, to the church and to your calling. i ask you to be a church which always listens and always acts in the name of jesus christ, in his name and for his people. i pray that your witness of faith may always be marked by charity and by the unity that comes from understanding. this witness is not only the responsibility of priests, religious and bishops. the laity must also speak of the gospel, for it is the most effective way of strengthening the churchs mission. it is up to the laity to confront their parish community with the great decisions of the day. in the midst of the challenges of the day, the laity must remain convinced of the inviolable value of the family, of marriage and of the dignity of women. the values of our culture which are threatened by so many evils in the world today have a particular value for the church, for they are values which give men and women the capacity to live in truth and to recognize the dignity of human life.
