Los Del Rio Macarena Acapella
Earlier this week, the Los del Rios Macarena ft Good People released an official video for the track, which is to be included on their forthcoming album. It features cameos from the girl, Lil Jon and several other Black Eyed Peas. Its a good move, bringing some much needed star power to the track, especially in light of the massive backbend fiasco that has hit the UK downloads market recently. On the downside, the video, which was directed by Joel Heyman (who also directed the Some Thing Stupid video) and stylised by Mark Liddell, lacks the quirky sense of humor and punchlines that made Some Things Stupid so great – at the very least its a bit too literal and stodgy to the point of being tedious, and that doesnt help things at all.

Los del Rios Macarena may be the most popular dance of all-time. Perhaps the Thriller dance is up there, and for a certain generation the Soulja Boy is iconic, but few dances have spawned generations of followers quite like the Macarena. Its a dance that people from ages 5 to 95 know, and as such, its a dance (song, to be more specific) that everybody knows.
Probably what appals me most is how phoned-in the vocal verses are here: out of tune, with sloppy timing and poor enunciation, and yet at the same time rather hammy, especially during the spoken bridge at 1:25. It doesnt help that they also sound like theyve been recorded too close to a cheap dynamic mic, giving an unflatteringly constricted and muffled tone. Putting aside my own rather elitist preferences, though, there is perhaps an argument that the very amateurishness of those parts helped set Macarena apart from its 90s club contemporaries and added a certain girl next door appeal to the performances.
Think being in a tight spot without any chocolate or cheese nearby is close to being cornered by a shark. And it is those, and other, moments when you really are at the shark end of a scale where they get you: the macarena is a perfect system to deal with those moments.
I have danced the Macarena six times and each time it is the same as the first. My thighs are in agony. The First time I danced I did the “cola” dance, the beat is bad. The last time I danced I was totally exhausted for two days. This is the only dance I think I can do if I have a heart attack or give up smoking.
The guy who teaches the classes is a nice guy who is proud of his dancing. He wants you to work at it. He also loves the Macarena, is rather an expert on it and knows a lot of the variations and tangoes. I have seen him do the dance and I love his style. So this is a good way to have fun and get fit at the same time. I like how the Macarena is such a good workout. I have done some jumping jacks to the Macarena and it is much easier than jumping jacks. I know I will be sore the next day. I can understand why it has become such a famous dance. You can do it anywhere. I learned the Tango version which is a much higher choreography. I have never danced the “cola” and “tango” but they teach me the “shark” which is a very different choreography but lots of fun and is a challenge to do. It is nothing like the Macarena. My usual partner is Cuban and on week-ends we have dancing parties. I am getting much better at the Macarena. The Cuban is learning it and they even have a great salsa dance. I was actually dancing before I got pregnant with my daughter. Its been six weeks since I did the Macarena and I am still dancing. I did not think I would be able to do it so soon after the baby was born but I am still dancing. I want to start salsa dancing but the Macarena is a good workout so I am learning that. I have not danced salsa but I go to salsa dances and parties. I am learning how to salsa dance but its really hard for me. There is always something or someone in my way.
